What Is The Difference Between Coaching And Counseling?

One of the best descriptions of the difference between a coach and a counselor is this: a counselor is like an archaeologist who helps you dig up and understand the past, while a coach is like an architect who helps you build the future. Counseling often focuses on healing past wounds, addressing mental health concerns, trauma, and grief, while coaching is a non-clinical, future-focused partnership designed to help you gain clarity, rediscover your strengths, set goals, and move forward with purpose and confidence.

Having spent 13 years as a licensed professional counselor, Kathy deeply values both approaches. While her coaching may occasionally draw on past experiences when helpful, the focus will be on helping you move forward toward the life God is calling you to live.

Who Is Coaching For?

Coaching is especially helpful for adults who are functioning well yet feel stuck, uncertain, or overwhelmed, or are simply ready for meaningful growth and change.

You may be navigating a difficult season, a major life transition, relationship challenges, loss, spiritual questions, burnout, or a sense that something in your life needs to change, even if you cannot yet fully explain what that is. Or you may want coaching to gain clarity, a renewed sense of purpose, greater confidence, healthier patterns, or support in moving forward. Whether you’re feeling discouraged, seeking direction, or simply want someone to walk alongside you as you grow, coaching can offer encouragement, perspective, and practical next steps.

You don’t need to have everything figured out before you begin. Sometimes the first step is simply being willing to start the conversation.

Why Shouldn’t I Just Work Through This On My Own?

There’s nothing wrong with trying to work through challenges on your own. In fact, many people do so for years. But sometimes we all need someone who can offer perspective, encouragement, and honest guidance.

When you’re in the middle of a life transition, whether it’s grief, uncertainty, or feeling stuck, it can be hard to see clearly on your own. Coaching offers a safe, supportive space to process what you’re experiencing, identify what may be holding you back, and move forward with greater confidence and clarity. Sometimes, the right questions from the right person can change everything.

What Does Coaching Offer?

Life can be hard at times, and difficult circumstances are sometimes beyond our control, but they do not have to define us.

Coaching offers encouragement, perspective, accountability, and practical tools to help you navigate life’s challenges with resilience and hope. Together, we’ll identify meaningful goals, uncover strengths you may not fully recognize, and develop practical next steps to help you move forward with greater confidence and purpose. Whether you’re navigating a major life transition, rediscovering your identity, or simply feeling stuck, coaching can help you move forward with greater purpose and confidence.

What Happens In A Coaching Session?

Because every person’s story, goals, and needs are unique, coaching sessions are tailored to you. Some clients come with specific challenges or goals they want to discuss. Others come with something weighing heavily on their hearts that needs attention first. Sessions are designed to meet you right where you are and gently help you move toward where you want to be. Your time with Kathy may include meaningful conversation, reflection, practical tools, goal-setting, and personalized next steps. Because coaching is a collaborative process, active participation is essential.

Occasionally, she may suggest a resource or simple activity between sessions, such as journaling, reflection questions, recommended reading, or another practical step to help you continue making progress. Together, you’ll identify areas where growth, clarity, or change may be needed, set realistic goals, and develop practical strategies to help you move forward with greater clarity, confidence, and a sense of purpose. If appropriate and desired, Kathy can integrate biblical principles and faith-based encouragement into your time together.

Do I Need To Share Things I’d Rather Keep Private?

Some topics or stories can be difficult to share, and that’s normal and okay. You don’t have to share anything you don’t want to or that makes you uncomfortable. Trust takes time, and it’s important that you feel safe and comfortable. You never have to share anything you’re not ready to discuss.

It’s important to build a trusting relationship between coach and client, and your sessions always progress at a pace that feels right for you. Together, you’ll build a relationship grounded in trust and support.

How Long Does Coaching Take?

Because coaching is tailored to your goals and circumstances, there’s no one-size-fits-all timeline.

Some clients experience meaningful breakthroughs in just a few sessions, while others benefit from ongoing support over weeks or months. We will regularly evaluate your progress and determine together what feels most helpful for you. Each coaching session lasts approximately 50 minutes.

Is Coaching Covered By Insurance?

No. Coaching services are not covered by insurance, including Medicare or Medicaid. However, we have worked to keep our rates as affordable as possible so that support remains accessible to those who need it.

What If I Need To Cancel My Appointment?

We understand that life happens. If you need to cancel or reschedule your appointment, please contact us at least 24 hours in advance. Sessions canceled with less than 24 hours’ notice are not refundable.

Are Coaching Sessions Confidential?

Yes. Your privacy is deeply important to us. Everything shared during coaching sessions is treated with the utmost respect, care, and confidentiality. Any personal information shared through this website is also kept secure.

Because Kathy has a professional counseling background and operates with integrity and care, Texas law requires a few legal exceptions to confidentiality. These include situations involving suspected abuse, neglect, or exploitation of a child, an elderly person, or a disabled individual. In Texas, all persons are mandated reporters in these circumstances. Confidentiality may also be limited when someone may be at risk of harming themselves or others.

The goal is always to create a safe, supportive, and trusted environment where you feel comfortable sharing at a pace that feels right for you.
